The Racha; Heaven On Earth

As the first leg of our trip on mainland Phuket drew to a close we were whisked away to The Racha’s luxury lounge at Chalong pier where we enjoyed refreshments while checking in and awaiting our next mode of transport. After a short time we excitedly boarded the Racha’s beautiful speed boat and within 35 minutes we approached the most magnificent bay I have ever laid eyes on. The untouched island of Koh Racha Yai boasts crystal clear water, white powder sand and luscious tropical foliage which creates the perfect home to The Racha; a luxury 5 star resort comprising of immaculate self contained villas dotted along the width of Patok bay. I literally couldn’t wait to disembark and start exploring!

As we approached the property we were given the warmest welcome and led straight to our incredible villa which was adorned with a private infinity pool overlooking the bay; a view that can only be described as breathtaking.

On arrival it is immediately easy to see why The Racha has secured itself as an exclusive member of the ‘Leading Small Hotels Of The World’. The attention to detail is unparalleled; from the WiFi and flat screen TV in the private transfer which collected us from our previous hotel, the underwater sound systems, the little gifts accompanied with fun facts about the island left on your pillow at nightly turn down, the pillow menu which ensured that everyone has a perfect nights sleep to the bell that was left at your sun lounger both poolside and beachside to ensure that your every whim was catered for- no detail has been overlooked.

We settled in remarkably quickly and thanks to the wonderful team, felt very much at home! Our six days were spent splashing around in the clear blue ocean, cooling off in the beautiful partially shaded garden pool drinking fresh coconuts, enjoying the complimentary water sports which included snorkelling, paddle boarding and kayaking to name a few, sipping delicious cocktails while watching each spectacular sunset and of course, indulging in the incredible cuisine the resort’s restaurants offered.

During our stay we dined at both The Sunset restaurant which specialised in local Thai cuisine and The Earth Cafe which had options spanning a large selection of Western and Thai cuisine. Both restaurants had impeccable service and served dishes of exceptional quality. Breakfast, which was also served in the Earth cafe was an indulgent affair, with a rich selection of breads, cheeses, cereals, salads, meats, soups, dim sum, cooked breakfast items, eggs made to order, fresh juices, sparkling wine and specialty teas and coffee.

The resort is ideal for those who crave complete relaxation. Everything about The Racha promotes rejuvenation, you can swim, gym, yoga and enjoy a wide number of spa treatments in the state of the art Anumba Spa to ensure you are feeling your absolute best. I indulged in a signature massage which was heavenly. The setting of the spa and quality of therapists make a treatment an absolute must whilst staying at the resort.

For those with an adventurous spirit, there are also many activities to keep you busy if you so wish; snorkelling, day boat trips, cycling, cookery classes, yoga and exploring the island. Koh Racha Yai is easily explored in half a day. You can either set of by foot or on bike and make your way across the island on the interconnecting dirt paths. There are a number of beautiful bays which we really enjoyed discovering. As you explore the island you will most likely cross paths with water buffalo and large Monitor lizards (up to 6 feet in length!) both are fascinating creatures that are not to be feared and further add to the beauty of this untouched island.

Whether you are spending your vacation with your family, friends or significant other, The Racha ensures that everyone feels equally welcome. There is an excellent kids club and daily kids activity itinerary to ensure that children have the time of their lives but equally the hotel has designated an entire deck including large infinity swimming pool to adults only for those who prefer a quieter atmosphere.

If you take one piece of advice from me, it is that you experience The Racha for yourself. The resort holds an incredibly special place in my heart and having travelled widely, I can safely say that there is no where quite like it.
